Compounding Options for Treatment of Anal Fissures
An anal fissure is a small tear in the tissue that lines the anus. This may occur for a number of reasons including but not limited to passing hard or large stools, chronic diarrhea, or a complication of Crohn’s disease1. Anal fissures can cause a cycle of inflammation, pain, and spasm.
To help aid in the treatment of this condition we offer the following compounded medications: diltiazem, nifedipine, and nitroglycerin ointments, creams, or gels2. Diltiazem and nifedipine belong to a class of medications called calcium channel blockers and help to reduce the pressure at the site of the fissure to improve healing while nitroglycerin dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow to promote healing2.
